ARCHITECTURAL LOVE IS IN THE AIR!

“Girl, there’s no acceptable substitution for your quality and performance in my specifications”

We firmly believe that God created architects on a Monday after a well rested Sunday! We are complete in all ramifications. Aside from being at the vanguard of the built environment, the average architect is a romantic at heart.

It’s the season of love once again and Valentine’s Day is right at our doorstep. So for both the ladies and gentlemen alike, just in case you have run out of sweet words for your special someone this season, we have decided to help your love ‘ministry’. Kindly feel free to borrow from the following architectural 'sweet nothings' we came across and just had to share.

WELCOME TO THE GOLDEN ERA – CHERISHED GOLD

Cherished Gold is the Dulux 2016 Colour of the Year. According to Dulux, the choice of this colour ties with the on-going trend especially in interiors of using metallic tones in the home. Coming on the heels of the 2015 Copper Blush, Cherished Gold is a gold influenced ochre (deep yellow) which is warm and subtle.
It can be utilized as a statement colour or in combination with other hues such as fresh pastels e.g. baby pink, sky blue, mauve (pale violet) or rich jewel tones such as emerald green, coral, electric blue and magenta. Neutrals such as grey or beige work well with this colour.

Rebecca Williamson, Dulux's Senior Design and Content Manager opines that gold and tones of gold are being used everywhere in the design world. She believes that as metallics continue to add that feel good factor in our homes, this earthy gold inspired hue will offer that little touch of glamour in an authentic and personal way.

ALEJANDRO ARAVENA - 2016 PRITZKER PRIZE LAUREATE

The year certainly holds great promises for the Curator of the 2016 Venice Biennial, Alejandro Aravena who has also been announced as the 2016 winner of architecture’s most prestigious award, the Pritzker Prize.
In his citation by the Pritzker Prize jury, the 48 year old native of Santiago, Chile, is described as leading a new generation of architects that has a holistic understanding of the built environment and has clearly demonstrated the ability to connect social responsibility, economic demands, design of human habitat and the city. And in doing so, has meaningfully expanded the role of the architect.

Going further, the jury believes that what sets Aravena apart is his commitment to social housing. As the Director of ELEMENTAL, a company co-owned by three groups: the private architects who work for the company, a Catholic university, and Chile's largest oil company, Aravena and his collaborators have consistently realised works with clear social goals. Calling the company a ‘Do Thank” as opposed to the norm of a Think Tank, they have built more than 2500 units using imaginative, flexible and direct architectural solutions for low cost social housing.

A CLUTTER- FREE 2016 - 7 Tested & Easy Tips

Each year brings with it the usual practice of making resolutions. Most of us are awash with resolutions to make us perform optimally, be better people, and generally make the world a better place!
One common resolution that would unite a huge percentage of us would be that of having better organized working and living environments. Central to achieving this is de-cluttering. Getting rid of clutter not only leads to increased efficiency due to the reduction in time spent looking for items, but it helps with the maximization of our spaces.

Clutter practically creeps upon us. One minute, there is ample space and the next thing; one is literally drowning in stuff. Most of us can identify with the fact that getting rid of clutter is usually easier said than done! The good news is that hope is not lost! Here are some de-cluttering tips.

LAGOS ARCHITECTS FORUM 2015- The VERVEPOINTS Perspective.

From this year's theme,  it was obvious that the sixth edition of the Lagos Architects Forum (LAF), an annual event organised by the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Architects was serious business! From the ease of registration to the calibre of resource persons invited, display of architects’ works and the exposition of products and services by reputable companies, this year’s programme was taken a notch higher and one can daresay that this edition was a runaway success.

At the programme which was held at the prestigious Expo Centre of the Eko Hotel and Suites, the Association of Consulting Architects Nigeria was ably represented at the various activities lined up for the four day event from May 6th – 9th 2015. A major highlight of the programme was the series of workshop/ Master Classes headlined by architectural heavyweights from both within and outside the country. Expectedly, ACANigeria’s impact was felt with some of its members forming the bulk of resource persons for the seminars which spanned three days.

WEARABLE ARCHITECTURE

3D printing has become a useful tool in solving both complex and everyday design issues as evidenced in this shoe design from United Nude, a popular Dutch footwear brand that has carved a niche for itself with its ultra unique footwear.

One of its latest shoes named the ICE shoe comprises of a detachable upper leather strap and a white eight inch 3D printed sole made of plastic PLA filament. The white platform sole has been designed as though hewn from a block of ice. Talk about wearable architecture even if not for the faint hearted!
