WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY 2019

Architects are united in their excitement world wide today! It's our day- World Architecture Day. It was created by the Union International des Architects (UIA) or the International Union of Architects as it is more popularly known to further underscore the importance of architects, their leadership in the built environment industry and by extension also, their invaluable role in shaping the world we live, work and play in.

World Architecture Day is marked on the first Monday of October every year to coincide with the United Nation's World Habitat Day. The day according to the UIA is "to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat". The UIA president added that this year's theme " Architecture...Housing for All" is not just a tagline, it is a duty, a demand and a commitment" The 2019 theme is pertinent in the face of Nigeria's conservatively estimated housing deficit of 22 million units. Affordable housing is one of the key priorities of the Sustainable Goal 11 which has as its main crux, the creation of sustainable cities and communities.

As is the usual practice, various activities have been lined up world-wide to celebrate and showcase the transformative powers of architecture. In Nigeria, the various state chapters of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) have come up with seminars, dinners and public awareness programmes to mark the day.
